There he meets Lara Sigurd, a striking priestess of Zoryn with snow-white hair and deadly skill with blade and bow. Pike's Purpose

The Hegemony is falling, but a new terror is rising in the shadows.

Sarah Harkness is a woman of many faces—and even more secrets. While her official role is as a project administrator for the Reconstruction, Investment & Development Agency (RIDA), her “extracurricular" activities involve hunting the thirteen warlords who turned Alliance planets into their private despotic playgrounds. She is the shadow that provides the justice the government is too slow to deliver.
But Sarah isn’t as invisible as she thinks.
Special Agent Hugh Ryan has been watching. He doesn’t want to arrest her; he wants to recruit her. The Alliance is flying blind in the Hegemony, and Sarah’s connection to the powerful Shimano Brotherhood is the only key to an intelligence network that can prevent total galactic collapse
Now, Sarah and Hugh must go undercover as a wealthy couple in the heart of the United Worlds. Their mission: infiltrate the capital of Perseus, outmaneuver the brilliant but dangerous spymaster Damian Simon, and stop the psychopathic Francisco Marquardt before his reign of terror turns entire systems into graveyards.
As Admiral Sandy Pike prepares the Alliance Navy for a war that seems inevitable, Sarah and Hugh must walk a razor’s edge. In a game where the banks are calling in their debts and the "disappeared" are mounting by the thousands, one wrong move won't just end their lives—it will ignite a fire that burns the galaxy to ash.

If you enjoy classic space opera with tactical ship combat, compelling characters, and intricate world-building, you'll be captivated by book four of Lieutenant Commander Pike, Pike's Passage.

Pick up your copy and join Commander Pike on his journey today!

But wait, There's More!

Release day for Deceptive Betrayal, Book 5 of the Orion Spur series!

One ship was a shield. Now, a fleet must become the sword.

The arms race for the Orion Spur has reached a terrifying conclusion. Thanks to a catastrophic technology leak, the Alliance and the Economic Union no longer hold the monopoly on the tyazhest drive—a weapon capable of creating singularities that implode entire battleships in the blink of an eye.

Captain Archer Devereaux, the man who awakened the ancient ship Defender, finds himself sidelined by suspicion. With his partner, Bette Matteson, appearing to defect to the hostile Federation, Archer is grounded and his loyalty questioned just as the galaxy reaches its breaking point.

But when the Federation finally declares open war, the Alliance has only one move left.

To survive a numerical disadvantage that should be certain death, they must launch a desperate, preemptive strike using the new fold strike force—a handful of experimental capital ships capable of instantaneous jumps. Archer is called back to the bridge as Commodore, tasked with leading a high-speed, hit-and-run campaign across enemy systems.

From deep-cover espionage within the Federation to high-octane fleet engagements, the stakes have never been higher. Archer must master the skladka fold technology to strike the heart of the enemy before they can unify their fleets. If he fails, the tyazhest weapons will be turned against inhabited worlds, and the Orion Spur will burn.

Experience the fifth installment of the Orion Spur series, a military science fiction epic where ancient AI secrets and cutting-edge tactics decide the fate of humanity.

Release day for Defender's Awakening, Book four of the Orion Spur series!

Book 4 of the Orion Spur series is now available!

After a risky hyperspace jump, Captain Archer Devereaux arrives in an uninhabited sector of the Orion Spur.

He finds a long-abandoned ship with technology far advanced beyond any known in his region of space. Even more puzzling, the ship is of human construction. As the ship regains functionality, traps left by mutineers threaten the lives of Archer and the tiny crew aboard the derelict.

When he succeeds in bringing Defender back to Alliance space, an idealistic scientist posts critical information regarding Defender’s advanced technology. The Nemeans and Scyllans press for peace talks—a delaying tactic while they evaluate the information dump. When they learn that implementation is at least a year away, they break the truce violently, attempting to capture the Alliance and EU delegates during peace talks on Earth.

Archer suffers devastating losses in the attack, which he has difficulty processing emotionally. His lover, Bette Matteson, has her own issues of this type, and the two part on uncertain terms. She then disappears, leaving a cryptic note.

Defender’s Awakening is a pulse-pounding space opera of interstellar intrigue, moral dilemmas, and fragile emotional bonds. It’s perfect for fans of epic sci-fi adventures, where heroes must not only battle their foes but also control their hearts.

Book five, Deceptive Betrayal, and Book six, Unfettered Folds, are coming soon! I’m already working on Book seven!

The re-launch of the second book of the Captain Halberd series is a week from today. In Harm’s Way will be available December 16, 2025.

Release Day! Fondness for Adversity now available

Fondness for Adversity is now available on Amazon! https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0FM993SWR

Returning after a well-deserved leave, Archer Devereaux is given a tame assignment while the yard is finishing up repairs on his ship.

Tame for anyone else, perhaps, but Archer seems to have a special kind of magnet that attracts trouble—this time from inside the Phlegraean Alliance. His diplomatic mission goes wrong quickly, and things get worse from there.

As before, he manages to play the hand he is dealt skillfully, no matter how weak the cards he has been given. Assistance comes from unexpected and unlikely people, but for Archer, reprieves are only temporary. The war continues, and Archer Devereaux is in the thick of it.

Although the book ends on a lighter note for him, how long can he expect things to remain on a positive track?

New books available for pre-order!

Wow! Time flies... When I wrote my last post (in January), I hoped that I would have more to say shortly thereafter. That turned out not to be the case. A difficult winter turned into a grueling spring. I did manage to finish the second book of the Orion Spur series, but otherwise was unable to gain traction on any of my writing projects.

There is good news--in several parts.

First, with the end of the school year, I am now retired from teaching and able to devote myself to my writing. I am slowly getting back into the swing of it. At the moment I am working on the third book of the Orion Spur series. I also plan to continue to work on the next of the FitzDuncan adventures (featuring Prince Rob) and hope to pick up work on the follow up to Burden.

Next, the first two books of the Orion Spur series are available for pre-order. Misfortune's Favorite is scheduled to release on July 8 (N.B.: because of Prime Day, this has been pushed back to July 22). Here is the link: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0F2SLWJF7. The second book, The Scourge of the Scyllans, is scheduled to release on August 5. Here is that link: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0FBYX5DPH.

The third piece of good news is that all three of the Mercenary Navy books are now available as audiobooks. Here are the links:
Rawlins' Redemption (https://www.amazon.com/Rawlins-Redemption-Mercenary-Navy-Book/dp/B0DWTXKYZW/ref=tmm_aud_swatch_0),
Swiftsure Ascendant (https://www.amazon.com/Swiftsure-Ascendant-Mercenary-Navy-Book/dp/B0DZ77R8LG/ref=tmm_aud_swatch_0)
Tenuous Defense (https://www.amazon.com/Tenuous-Defense-Mercenary-Navy-Book/dp/B0F9BCS4M9/ref=tmm_aud_swatch_0)

The last piece of good news for this posting is that I will be attending DragonCon in Atlanta this upcoming Labor Day weekend. If any of you are there, I hope to see you. At some point I will be signing books at the Aethon Books booth.

New year, new series coming, hearty thanks, and a big change

As it is already January 11, I don't think it's appropriate to wish anyone Happy New Year at this late date. I apologize for the lengthy delay since my last post. Last summer was an incredibly busy and productive time for me as a writer, and when I wrapped things up to return to school, I took a bit of a break from writing.

That break is now over, I'm happy to say. I just submitted the first book of a new series that AethonBooks will publish. The series is tentatively known as the Orion Spur series. The first book (less tentatively) will be titled Misfortune's Favorite. It is a military science fiction/space opera series, set in the future, featuring a main character named Archer Devereaux. I have already begun writing the second book. I do not have any idea of the publication date of Misfortune's Favorite, but hope to be able to provide an update soon.

Speaking of AethonBooks, a hearty thanks to them, and also to you, my readers. When I woke on Christmas morning, Rawlins' Redemption (the first book of the Mercenary Navy series) reached a milestone of having over 1,000 ratings on Amazon. It is the first of my books to reach that level. With any luck, Swiftsure Ascendant, the second of the series, will reach that level soon.

Finally, this will be my last year teaching full-time. It is not so much a "retirement" as it is a reallocation of my time (and changing from "employed" to "self-employed"). When the school year ends, I will be able to write year-round. I am looking forward to it. In addition to the new Orion Spur series, I am also working on the first stand-alone Prince Rob book. I also will be writing the sequel to Burden. This change will also allow me to consider attending "cons" and I am looking into going to the next DragonCon.

Thank you for your support. I hope my next post will not be as delayed as this was!

New releases and new books!

The biggest news in this post is the upcoming release of a new entry in the FitzDuncan series. Before I get to that, I want to attend to the publication schedule of new and upcoming books in chronological order. Scroll down for more details.

The first book in the Mercenary Navy series from AethonBooks released on July 23. Early reviews are positive, and I am happy it is being well received. If you would like to read it, the link to amazon is: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0D33VGXRJ

The first of a new series, Burden, will arrive on August 15. Burden is a swashbuckling adventure set in a fictional medieval world. To read Burden please go to: https://www.amazon.com/Burden-John-Spearman-ebook/dp/B0D9HVBVCW/

Swiftsure Ascendant is the second book in the Mercenary Navy series from AethonBooks. It is scheduled to be published on August 20. You can find the book here: https://www.amazon.com/Swiftsure-Ascendant-Mercenary-Navy-Book-ebook/dp/B0D98S5BBK/

Now, the newest entry in the FitzDuncan series, FitzDuncan's Peril. The book takes up where FitzDuncan's Navy left us. I finished writing FitzDuncan's Beginning before completing Peril, but decided that it makes more sense to push Beginning back (since it is a prequel) and publish Peril sooner. The cover for Peril is being designed by the extremely talented Thea Magerand but since I just asked her to do it yesterday, it's not ready.  As soon as she supplies me a cover, I'll put up it for presale on amazon. I am hoping the publication date will be September 15.

Finally, there is FitzDuncan's Beginning.  I pushed the release date for Beginning back to October 15. You can find it on amazon here: https://www.amazon.com/FitzDuncans-Beginning-FitzDuncan-John-Spearman-ebook/dp/B0D9MSVM36/

Something new, and something completely different (well, maybe not completely)

We are approaching the release date for Rawlins' Redemption, July 16. This is the first book in the Cliff Rawlins series and the first book of mine to be published by Aethon Books. I am excited to see how the book is received, and what effect the partnership with Aethon Books has in terms of reaching a broader audience. Here is the link to pre-order: https://www.amazon.com/Rawlins-Redemption-Cliff-Book-ebook/dp/B0D33VGXRJ

Speaking of reaching a broader audience, the good folks at Interfleet Broadcasting were kind enough to have me on their show June 13. The link to it is: https://www.youtube.com/live/9m0oUcu0-FY?si=W69EgOiP_7FdFtfm

The actual interview begins around the 43:00 mark. Great guys--I thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

The last item for this post is some news about a new book I just turned over to my editor. When I say "new," the term is relative. It really goes back more than twenty years—when I was still in the corporate world. My very good friend (who has since passed from a brain tumor) urged me to begin writing.

What I wrote was an adventure story. I shared it with him, and he enjoyed it. Then, work commanded my full attention, and I set it aside, not knowing how to proceed (the publishing world was very different then). Other complications and challenges in my life followed, and I mostly forgot about the book. My friend, one of the best people I will ever know, succumbed to cancer.

In 2016, I finished reading a science fiction novel that I will charitably describe as mediocre. When I claimed I could do a better job, my wife challenged me to prove it. The result of that was Gallantry in Action. When, to my pleasant amazement, Gallantry found an audience, I remembered the book I had written years before and tried to find it.

Sadly, over the years, the original manuscript was lost due to multiple computer crashes and changes in email providers. I asked the son of my late friend to see if he could somehow access his father's old emails, but that proved to be a dead end after so long. Nonetheless, I tried to recreate what I wrote years before.

As I started to write, I kept the basic premise but I changed what I thought were some of the weaker plot points. I reached a point where inspiration began to fade, and the idea of writing the next book in the Halberd series (In Harm's Way) seized my focus. True Allegiance and Surrender Demand followed. The Halberd books found an audience, and I learned a great deal about the business of self-publishing.

My focus then turned to putting what I learned as a result of the Halberd books into a new series. The first, Pike's Potential, and the second, Pike's Passage, were far more successful in terms of sales and readership than the Halberd books. I took the royalties from the Pike books and poured them back into paying for new covers and editing of the Halberd books.

While writing Pike's Progress, inspiration dried up and Casimir FitzDuncan popped into my head. Then came Perseverance Andrews, and, most recently, Cliff Rawlins. At the moment, I am working on the third book in the Rawlins series, and books nine and ten in the FitzDuncan series (one a continuation, the other a prequel).

For whatever reason, Cliff and Fitz didn't seem interested in communicating with me. Something possessed me to go back to the story I started writing more than twenty years ago, then rebooted six years ago and shelved. Ideas flowed, and I quickly reached a point where I wanted to end book one, with the rest of the story to be concluded in book two.

What's it about? Like the FitzDuncan books, it is set in a fictional medieval world—pre-industrial and pre-gunpowder. Unlike FitzDuncan, there is no supernatural element--just swashbuckling derring-do. There is an assassination. You'll also find nefarious plots, thrilling escapes, romance, and intrigue.

Look for this book, tentatively titled Burden, to appear on Amazon soon. The extremely talented Thea Magerand is working on a cover. I expect to release it in mid-August to early September unless my editor uncovers major problems I need to address.

As always, thank you for reading.

FitzDuncan's Navy release, new look to website, and first look at the cover of "Rawlins' Redemption"

Just a reminder, FitzDuncan's Navy, the eighth book in the series, publishes on April 1. The FitzDuncan series was recently named a Finalist in the Chanticleer International Book Awards.

I recently had my website redesigned to give it a bit more sizzle. Feel free to check it out: johnjspearmanauthor, com.

Last but not least, here is a look at the first draft of the cover of the new series I am creating that will be published by Aethon Books. I am excited to see this book launch!

Latest Awards, FitzDuncan's Navy available for pre-order

I am very excited to share that TWO of my book series were selected as Finalists in the Chanticleer International Book Awards (CIBA). The FitzDuncan series of novels was selected as a Finalist in CIBA's Ozma category, covering Fantasy Fiction. The Jonah Halberd series was selected in the Cygnus category, covering Science Fiction.
What does this mean? In order to reach this stage, the books in the series survived four rounds of judging. Both are eligible to be named as the First Place Winner in each category, and as the overall CIBA Grand Prize Winner. Regardless of what happens next, it is gratifying to see that independent, objective judges enjoy my work.

Speaking of the FitzDuncan series, the eighth book, FitzDuncan's Navy, is scheduled to release on April 1. You can pre-order it now on amazon (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CVN9K1KY)

The Halberd series is also available on amazon, beginning with the first book, Gallantry in Action (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0743MGN5R). I invite you to check these books out.

New Developments, New Books

2024 is off to a rip-roaring start. The first and biggest development is the publishing contract I signed with Aethon Books (https://aethonbooks.com/). They will be publishing a new military science fiction/space opera series I have begun writing. The new books feature a protagonist named Cliff Rawlins, and are set in a new universe.

The series will include at least three books. The first book, Rawlins's Redemption, is already being edited. As soon as I have a better idea of when Aethon would like to release it, I will share the news.

In addition to Rawlins's Redemption, I also just finished writing the eighth FitzDuncan adventure, FitzDuncan's Navy. That is also in the process of being edited. The extremely talented Thea Magerand has already designed the cover, and I think it's the best one yet.  For the first time, readers will get to see what Fenwick looks like.

Next, I was just informed that The Courage of the Commonwealth was named as a Finalist in the 2024 Feathered Quill Awards.

Finally, the audiobook version of The Resolve of the Commonwealth is available for pre-order right now on audible. Alex Picard has done a marvelous job of bringing my characters to life. I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I did.

Awards and more awards

In the last week, I was excited to learn that some of my books were chosen for a couple of awards. I can't lie--validation like this is food for my soul. When complete strangers pick your work out of hundreds of entries as something worthy of recognition, it's a nice feeling.

The two different organizations that contacted me are the Best Book Awards (BBA), and indieBRAG (Book Readers Appreciation Group). I urge you to visit their websites to find other award-winning books (http://americanbookfest.com/2023bbafullresults.html and https://www.bragmedallion.com/). Here are the books that they honored:
