Returning after a well-deserved leave, Archer Devereaux is given a tame assignment while the yard is finishing up repairs on his ship.
Tame for anyone else, perhaps, but Archer seems to have a special kind of magnet that attracts trouble—this time from inside the Phlegraean Alliance. His diplomatic mission goes wrong quickly, and things get worse from there.
As before, he manages to play the hand he is dealt skillfully, no matter how weak the cards he has been given. Assistance comes from unexpected and unlikely people, but for Archer, reprieves are only temporary. The war continues, and Archer Devereaux is in the thick of it.
Although the book ends on a lighter note for him, how long can he expect things to remain on a positive track?
